China Mobile's EDGE Network to Start Commercialization in Shanghai

China Mobile's Shanghai subsidiary is scheduled to inaugurate commercial operations of its 2.75G EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) network in the city as of May 17, 2007, China Business News reported. China Mobile's EDGE service is based on the company's GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network and is able to migrate to 3G WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) network without much ado. China Mobile has set aside more than 10 billion RMB (US$1.3 billion; US$1 = 7.7 RMB) for EDGE network upgrades across major Chinese cities, with nationwide coverage slated for completion by the year-end.
